Located in the Teacher Administrative Center, Printing & Publications Services provides printing and related services to all schools and divisions within ESU No. 19. We offer a wide variety of design, prepress, printing, copying and bindery services. If the nature of the finished product is such that it should be purchased commercially, Printing & Publications will assist with that process.
There are often multiple ways to produce a printed piece. The determination of whether a printing press or a xerographic copier is utilized depends on many factors. These factors include the quantity desired, the format (is it a booklet or a single sheet), the colors involved, the requested completion date, and the workload in the shop at any given time. These decisions are best made by the staff at Printing & Publications. We don't expect you, our valued customer, to evaluate those variables. You don't need to worry about how we produce your materials.
Whether we use a high volume copier or an offset printing press, rest assured we will provide the best quality and efficient service that we can. The staff at Printing & Publications pledges to make effective and efficient use of district and ESU resources.
The Printing & Publications staff handled 35,692 work requests for the 2017-18 school year. Requests ranged from simply “copier” type of work to complex multi-color booklets. In addition to printing and binding of a myriad of materials, Printing & Publications staff prepared materials for delivery via the US Postal Service. Most of these projects were mailed to parents and guardians as well as other stakeholders in the ESU. Mailing included verification of address quality with the Postal Service database and sophisticated bar-coding of the address in order to qualify for the lowest possible postage rates.
The Printing & Publications staff used a variety of equipment ranging from black and white copier/printers, color copier/printers and several offset printing presses to print on around 20 million sheets of paper for the 2017-18 school year.
The artists in Printing & Publications work with sophisticated imaging programs like Adobe InDesign, lllustrator, Freehand, and Photoshop to create brochures, publications, student handbooks, annual reports, course directories and it seems thousands of forms. Legibility, readability and cost-effective production are all factors that are considered by the artists as they create the document that will ultimately be reproduced on a printing press, a xerographic printer, a computer screen, or a wide-format inkjet printer.
Although the processes used by the artists are often referred to as "desktop publishing," the advanced knowledge of graphic arts enables the staff to maintain high levels of productivity and an equally high level of quality in the finished product.
Depending upon the needs of the customer and the requirements of the printing project, some or all of the following might be undertaken by the artists at Printing & Publications.
The Expedited Quick Copy Printing Service provides timely quality printed products. Depending on the size of the job, it can be printed and in the school mail overnight.
The service is limited to jobs that can be printed and finished in one operation by one operator. The vast majority of Quick Copy jobs are produced on high speed Xerox printers. These printers are capable of printing black ink on one side or both sides of paper sized 8.5" x 11", 8.5" x 14" or 11" x 17". These printers can also collate and finish jobs printed on 8.5" x 11" and 8.5" x 14" paper sizes. The finishing options include 1 or 2 staples on the left side of portrait jobs or the top of landscape jobs. Tape binding is also available at the left side of portrait jobs or the top of landscape jobs.
Submission of quick copy requests electronically via the Printing & Publications website is preferred. The time required to process an electronic order is significantly less than with an old-style paper request form with hard copy (paper) originals. In addition, the quality of reproduction is higher with PDFs compared to hard copy originals.
Press equipment can handle a wide range of paper sizes and types from envelopes to 12" x 18" sheets. We can print full color and single color, as well as black ink only jobs.
Our goal is to provide you with quality printed products in a cost-efficient manner. We're also aware that expensive processes and papers may be desirable however the public could perceive this as wasteful spending. This is always a balancing act between perception and reality. The following suggestions are provided to help you request cost-efficient printing.
Choose our stock papers. Special order papers are costly. Use NCR (carbonless) paper only when required. If only an occasional second, third or fourth copy is needed; make that copy on a copy machine. Carbonless paper is much more expensive. As an example, 1000 2-part carbonless forms cost 300% more than 1000 sheets of plain Paper.
